"YOUNG AUTHORS ACADEMY The EDEC’s Young Authors Academy gives students who are interested in becoming published authors the opportunity to write and publish a book, novel or memoir and takes the students from aspiring writers to published authors. Through the process, students write a full-length novel, book or memoir with the guidance of professional authors, teachers and volunteer writing coaches. Students consult with industry professionals about the design and publication of their novel and hear first-hand advice from other published authors, and foster peer relationships with other writers. At the end of the program students books, novels or memoirs will be debuted at an Academy book signing/launch reception where they will walk the red carpet, toast their accomplishments, and sign autographs. The I RISE Publishing Program (Impacting Racial Healing, Intervention, Social Justice And Equity In Education is aimed at empowering students through writing about personal experiences and using writing as a means to speak truth to power regarding racial injustices. The program encourages, inspire and motivate youths to learn about democratic values and how they can impact the democratic processes in their local communities. Youths have the opportunity to develop academic reading and writing skills in a holistic, caring, supportive and safe environment while focusing on racial inequality issues that matters to them. Students share their own experiences with racial inequalities and practical solutions through non-fiction writing and publishing using non-fiction narratives, memoirs, personal essays and poetry. TUTORING The Reach One Teach One STAAR Reading Tutoring Program provides individualized instruction to students who did not pass the Reading STAAR test. The program is tailored to serve identified fifth and eighth grade students who did not pass state assessment in reading who reside in underserved communities in the Dallas geographical area. The program provide supplementary educational services(TEKS based) in small group and one-on-one instruction for students in grades 5 and 8 who have not met the state standards for grade promotion and who did not pass the STAAR Reading assessment. COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS The Follow Your Dreams College And Job Readiness Workshop Series is an eight weeks series workshop that prepare students to enter college or the job market. The seminar provides students with information on planning and graduating from high school. EDEC collaborates with colleges and businesses to bring real world experience through speakers, job fairs, college tours and internships. The workshops are participatory and hands on. "
