Frontiers of Flight Museum

GRADES 1 – 2 Jr. Aviators Workshop (Jun 12-Jun 16; Jul 31-Aug 4) Jr. aviators experience the wonder of flight from man-made flying machines to the natural world of insects and birds through engaging activities. Students learn the parts of an airplane and their function, the International Phonetic Alphabet, compete in paper airplane challenges, perform wind tube experiments to see how moving air effects different objects, discover the importance of weather and seasonal changes to the migration of birds and butterflies, and learn how bees pollinate flowers by a local bee keeper. Students take a field trip to the Texas Discovery Garden to explore flight in the natural world. Jr. Star Hopping (Jun 26-Jun 30) Jr. astronomers take a galactic journey through our own solar system and the Milky Way Galaxy with SPOC, our portable planetarium. Students learn the phases of the moon and constellations in our night sky, create a model of the solar system, view the Sun through a solar telescope, build a model rocket, and plan an expedition to Mars. GRADES 3 – 4 Aviators Workshop (Jun 26-Jun 30; Jul 17-Jul 21) Young aviators learn the basic principles of flight and the fundamentals of aviation through engaging hands-on activities. Students learn the four forces of flight, how wings generate lift, the International Phonetic Alphabet, aircraft flight controls and instrumentation, aerial navigation using our virtual flight simulators, and construct a rubber-band powered balsa plane. Students take a field trip to Southwest Airlines, Gulfstream, and the Love Field Terminal to learn about the importance of aviation in our community. Star Hopping (Jun 12-Jun 16; Jul 24-Jul 28) Young astronomers and rocketeers explore our own solar system and the universe with SPOC, our portable planetarium. Students construct scale models of the Sun, Earth, Moon system and our solar system, create a star map,  learn the constellations in our night sky, explore the history of planetary exploration, plan a mission to another planet, view the Sun through a solar telescope, and construct and launch a single stage rocket. GRADES 5 – 6 Advanced Aviators Workshop (Jul 10-Jul 14; Jul 24-Jul 28) Budding aviators gain an in-depth knowledge of aviation through engaging experiments and hands-on activities. Students learn the four forces of flight, experiment with airfoils to determine lift and drag, aircraft flight dynamics (pitch, roll, and yaw), controls and instrumentation, aerial navigation using virtual flight simulators, effects of weather on flight, and construct a rubber-band powered balsa plane. Students take a field trip to Southwest Airlines, Gulfstream, and the Love Field Terminal  to learn about the importance of aviation in our community. Intergalactic Science (Jun 19-Jun 23; Jul 31-Aug 4) Budding astronomers and rocketeers explore the solar system and the universe with SPOC, our portable planetarium. Students construct scale models of the Sun, Earth, Moon system and our solar system, create a star map,  learn the constellations in our night sky, explore the history of planetary exploration, plan a mission to another planet, view the Sun through a solar telescope, learn the fundamentals of rocketry, and construct and launch a single stage rocket. GRADES 7 – 10 Advanced Intergalactic Science (Jul 17-Jul 21) Future astronomers and rocketeers explore our solar system and the universe with SPOC, our portable planetarium. Students create their own script to be shown in SPOC, learn how astrochemists use chemistry to study stellar objects, view the Sun through a solar telescope and learn about the life cycle of stars, use mathematics to construct a scale model of our solar system, explore the history of planetary exploration, plan a mission to another planet, learn the fundamentals of rocketry, construct and launch an advanced single stage rocket, and work in teams to build and launch an multi-stage rocket. Students take a field trip to the UTD Center for Space Sciences and learn about the Center’s cutting edge research from real rocket scientists. Aero Lab (Jun 19-Jun 23) Future aerospace engineers gain an in-depth understanding of the principles of flight through 3D modeling and experimentation. Students design an airfoil using computer-aided drafting software and construct their design using a 3D printer, test their airfoil design in a wind tunnel to determine lift and drag, design and build a rubber-band powered balsa plane, learn aerial navigation using virtual flight simulators, and compete in paper airplane challenges. Students take a field trip to a local aerospace company to learn about careers in aerospace. Robotics, UAVs, and Coding (Jul 10-Jul 14) Learn the fundamentals of robotics and coding though an immersive week of building, programming, and play. Students build and program a robot to perform specified tasks, compete in a robotic maze challenge, design a computer game with Scratch programming, build and fly a UAV (drone), and compete in a drone challenge. Students take a field trip to learn about careers in robotics.
